If you have decided to postpone your spring or summer wedding due to COVID-19, we are so sorry. This uninvited guest has been causing a lot of stress for engaged couples as well as everyone who works in the wedding industry. If you are not working with a wedding planner, here’s our 10 step “DIY” guide to handling a postponement.
1. Thoroughly read the contracts you have with your venue and vendor team – this will give you a place to start these discussions.
2. Be willing to consider a Friday, Sunday or non-traditional weekday wedding if your venue has no Saturdays left this year – especially if most of your guests are local or won’t be traveling very far to attend your wedding.
3. Contact your venue to inquire about which dates they have available in the future. Compare this with the dates your wedding vendors give you.
4. Contact your vendor team to determine which dates they have available in the future. Compare this with the dates your venue gives you.
5. Contact your family/bridal party to see which date works best and select the date that works for the most important people.
6. Request revised contracts with your new date from your venue and vendor team, sign those contracts and keep copies for your file.
7. Select new wedding vendors if needed for the new date.
8. If invites have been sent, post your new date on your wedding website and send a link to the new info, send a “Change the Date” postcard or create a private Facebook Messenger thread to only the invited guests letting them know the new date.
9. Continue your planning and breathe a sigh of relief that the decision has been made…no second-guessing allowed.
10. Trust your venue/vendor team to exceed your expectations and look forward to a beautiful ceremony and a really great party in the future when the focus is on you and not COVID-19!
